France’s legislators are giving their final opinion today on adding the right to abortion to the constitution.

A special session (Congress) of both houses of the French Parliament is being held in Versailles. In France, the two houses rarely meet.
60% support of both houses is required to make abortion a part of the constitution.
The upper house, the Senate, voted in favor of allowing abortion last year. Opposition members are also with the government members in this matter.
Most lawmakers believe that the constitutional amendment to allow abortion could be reversed tomorrow.
President Emmanuel Macron also wants an amendment to the constitution allowing abortion rights that cannot be revoked or reversed.
The U.S. Supreme Court repealed the right to abortion in 2022. Legislators of many European countries, including France, fear that the American Supreme Court may not be followed.
